Just one of the reasons it’s getting harder. This was Sainsbury’s supermarket this morning, one of the cheapest in the area.

A fuel pump display shows a cost of £62.73 for 31.86 litres with diesel priced at 196.9 pence per litre, super unleaded at 183.9 pence, and unleaded at 171.9 pence.

It’s getting harder and harder to justify the luxury of keeping Sólmara in Falmouth Marina. But every time I walk the pontoons, every time I see her, and every time I step aboard, the more I know I need to find a way to do it.

Several sailboats and motorboats are docked at a marina on a bright, clear day.

It’s nearly October. It’s Cornwall. It’s dark. It’s windy. It’s raining. All perfectly normal. But……………..It’s 20°C (68℉). That my friends is far far from normal

The unexploded bomb found near Falmouth Docks on the 21st was detonated today. Great job by The Royal Navy. If the proposal to dredge the docks goes ahead , chances are they will be back again in the future!

A large splash is seen in the ocean near a rocky, tree-covered shoreline under a cloudy sky.

It’s been what foresters call a mast year. That’s when mature beech trees produce an unusually large quantity of seeds (Beech Mast) They were crunching underfoot on my afternoon walk. Apparently the nuts are edible. Might toast a few in a pan and try them out.

A layer of spiky brown seed pods and dried leaves covers the grassy ground.

Lunchtime watch: Interview with Aldous Huxley from 1958 giving his thoughts on technology, society, and the future of humanity. One gem - “we mustn’t be caught by surprise by our own advancing technology.”. (AI anyone?). So much more of value here and well worth 30mins of your time.

A black-and-white photo shows a man in a suit with the name Aldous Huxley displayed prominently across the bottom.

As October and the last quarter of 2026 looms large I’m spending the day thinking, planning and preparing. The season changes regardless, any others are down to me.

The green green grass of home

A sunlit green field bordered by dense trees and shrubs with a forested hill in the background under a clear blue sky.

I’ve spent the morning wrestling MX records, DNS settings and a custom domain, all to escape Gmail. Frankly, I’ve had less trouble with a foul tide off the Lizard. But neil@neilhawkesford.co.uk is live, tested and mine. Freedom is lovely, though it does come with a lot more homework.
